What Is Hip Replacement? | Op. Dr. Hilmi Karadeniz Explains
The hip joint is one of the largest and most heavily loaded joints in the human body. It plays an important role in many everyday movements such as walking, sitting and climbing stairs. However, a hip joint that has worn down over time or been damaged by disease can cause severe pain and restricted movement. One of the effective treatments used in this situation is hip replacement surgery.
In this article, Op. Dr. Hilmi Karadeniz explains the most frequently asked questions, such as what hip replacement is, who it is for, how it is performed and what recovery is like.
What Is Hip Replacement?
Hip replacement is the procedure in which the damaged bone and cartilage surfaces of the hip joint are cleared and replaced with artificial components made of metal, ceramic and plastic. This restores normal joint function, relieves pain and allows the patient to return to an active life.
Hip replacement surgery is usually performed in conditions such as advanced hip osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis of the femoral head or deformities that develop after a hip fracture.
When Is Hip Replacement Needed?
Hip replacement surgery is considered in the following situations:
- Constant and severe hip pain
- Limping when walking, or needing a walking stick
- Difficulty with everyday movements such as climbing stairs or sitting
- No improvement despite physiotherapy and medication
- Advanced joint deterioration detected on radiological imaging
Types of Hip Replacement
1. Total Hip Replacement (THR)
Both the head of the thigh bone (femur) and the socket of the pelvis (acetabulum) are completely replaced. This is the most commonly used method.
2. Partial Hip Replacement
Usually in situations such as a hip fracture, only the femoral head is replaced. It is preferred for older patients with lower activity levels.
Preparing for Surgery
Op. Dr. Hilmi Karadeniz emphasises that pre-operative assessments must be carried out meticulously. During preparation, the following are considered:
- Heart and lung function tests
- Infection screening
- Pre-anaesthetic assessment
- Blood tests and imaging (X-ray, MRI, etc.)
- Analysis of bone density and general health for the prosthesis
How Is Hip Replacement Surgery Performed?
The operation is usually performed under spinal anaesthesia (numbing from the waist down) or general anaesthesia. It takes 1-2 hours on average. The surgeon opens the hip joint, clears the damaged surfaces and places suitable artificial components. These components are selected specifically for the patient and fixed securely.
Recovery After Surgery
Early mobilisation is very important after surgery. The patient is usually helped to stand up on the same day or the following day. Recovery generally progresses as follows:
- First 3 days: In-hospital monitoring and first exercises
- Week 1: Walking and sitting with physiotherapy support
- Week 3: Transition to independent walking
- Week 6 - Month 3: Return to daily life
- Month 3 - 1 year: The body fully adapts to the prosthesis
What Should You Pay Attention to After Hip Replacement?
- Do not skip the exercise programme
- Avoid falls from a height and sudden movements
- Pay attention to the angle of the hip when sitting down and standing up
- Follow hygiene rules because of the risk of infection
- Avoid excessive weight gain
- Do not stay inactive for long periods
How Long Does a Hip Replacement Last?
With today's technology, hip prostheses can function well for up to 20-25 years. However, the lifespan of the prosthesis may vary depending on the patient's age, weight and daily habits.
